The stainless steel spiraling stairs connecting ground to the first floor of my house, emits an overwhelming and otherworldly sonic field in it’s vicinity each time someone walks on it. I can hear it from my room on the third floor and at times I mistook it for a church bell. I decided that this was unfriendly, and was thus propelled to find ways to allow this stainless helix to be more of its sonic self. This intention crystallised in the form a feedback system using an exciter outputting vibrations into the stairs, and a €3 handheld microphone as input. The sound you are hearing was recorded with a Tascam DR-40 condenser mic placed about 4m from the stairs. The performance could be heard in the whole street.
